Hi! I hope you don't mind me asking some questions. I was wondering what website did you choose for becoming an au pair? What's it like living in Palermo??

I used aupair-world.com… Very good site. The vast majority of au pairs use the site for free. And Palermo? Well… For me, I absolutely fucking love it here. I’m literally smiling all the time… but a lot of students/au pairs who come here get frustrated with the cultural differences. So if you’re able to adapt/accept/appreciate the culture, it’s soooooooooooo fun. REALLY. I am ecstatic every single day. The weather is warm and sunny, the people are interesting and fun to talk to, the city is full of history, the food is fantastic, everything is beautiful, etc. Palermo CAN be a bit sketchy at times. If you’re a girl, you have to deal with shitty catcalls and blatant staring from creepy, gross men. It feels like everyone is always looking at you. This is amplified if you speak English out loud, have light-colored hair, or just generally give off a foreign vibe. You can also get pick-pocketed or something if you’re really stupid and not paying attention, but it’s definitely not something to be paranoid about. There’s SO many young travelers/students/au pairs here, it’s crazy. It’s a hugeeee network of people, and you’ll never have trouble making friends who also speak English. As for Palermitans, you can find a lot of friendly ones. Generally, the ones who speak English are already friends with some foreign people. However, I highly recommend finding Italian friends who barely speak English, because you’ll learn Italian a billion times faster. Anyways… If you want to eat pasta, bread, cheese, and wine every single day… and see mind-blowing historic monuments and buildings, and meet lots of sweet, fun, amazing people… (both foreign and Palermitan) … then come to Palermo. <3
